Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 8 Wrap

Round eight of the Stiles Electrical Premier League brought plenty of exciting action from close contests to dominant efforts.


Men’s

An action-packed contest saw Westside Wolves hold off a determined Whitford outfit 2-1 at Lemnos Field on Sunday 19 May.

From the outset, both teams looked to get a fast start, prompting plenty of back and forth.

As Wolves looked to score early, Whitford were determined to keep up with their fast pace, forcing the contest into an early deadlock.

It wasn’t until the 12th minute that a penalty corner was awarded, with Tom Harvie capitalising for the Wolves to get the early lead.

As Whitford strived to find a way to make a response and stifle the Wolves, the match-up hit another stalemate.

The intensity picked up late in the second term with Tom Harvie scoring a second goal off a penalty corner, only for Fraser Heigh to quickly respond to get Whitford on the board.

The second half saw both sides continue to fight hard in the action-packed contest with both sides mounting the pressure on one another.

The contest ultimately reached a deadlock, with neither side able to break through for further scores.

Despite several penalty corners being awarded, the Wolves held on to claim the 2-1 victory.

Elsewhere, a hat-trick from Kirby Hobbs helped Melville defeat North Coast Raiders 5-1, Reds defeated YMCC 4-2, WASPS dominated Mods-OGM 5-0, Hale held off UWA 5-4, and Fremantle Cockburn and Victoria Park drew at 2-2.

Women’s

Westside Wolves have kept their near-perfect record intact after holding off a solid Whitford outfit 2-1 at Lemnos Field on Sunday 19 May.

A fast-paced start saw both teams fighting hard to get the first score on the board, with Wolves’ Elly Buckley breaking through in the fourth minute to give the home side the early advantage.

Although Whitford made great leads towards goal thanks to outstanding runs by Elyssa Melville, the Wolves’ defence proved too strong.

As the Wolves looked to extend their lead during the second quarter, Whitford’s Lexie Elliott pulled off a field goal to bring the scores level by half time.

The contest reached a stalemate during the third period with neither side initially able to break through.

The Buckley sisters combined for a moment of brilliance with Jemma passing surely to Elly to score the Wolves’ second goal of the afternoon during the 42nd minute.

Although Whitford fought hard throughout the remainder of the match. Wolves held strong to win 2-1.

Elsewhere, UWA defeated Hale 3-1, North Coast Raiders put up a dominant effort against WASPS 4-0, Victoria Park beat Suburban Lions 2-0, and the match-up between Melville and Reds ended in a 2-2 draw.

Division 2

In the Men’s competition, Melville dominated Curtin University 3-0, WASPS defeated Mods-OGM 5-1, Reds held off YMCC 2-1, UWA beat out Hale 6-1, Fremantle Cockburn defeated Victoria Park 5-3, and Whitford edged out Westside Wolves 2-1.

In the Women’s competition, YMCC defeated North Coast Raiders 4-1, UWA beat Hale 3-1, Westside Wolves edged out Curtin University 2-1, Victoria Park defeated Suburban Lions 4-0, and Melville and Reds drew level at 1-1.
