Strikers' day out: outstanding performances in All Flags Premier League wins

Published Sat 14 Aug 2021

A fiery match between WASPs and North Coast Raiders opened the women's All Flags Premier League action on Saturday at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University, with a 2-1 victory for the visiting side.

A strong-looking WASPs side looked to hold off the visitors, who sat just two points ahead on the standings before the match, however Raiders looked the better side for almost all the whole match.

Shanea Tonkin put on an outstanding performance in the front line for the victors, able to find the backboard alongside teammate Jade Vanderzwan, while WASPs Camryn Tidy was able to do the same for her side with just 90 seconds to spare.

In a huge shock result, bottom-placed YMCC defeat fourth-placed Hale on Saturday, the finals-bound side looking to regain its form as finals begins to loom for the former ladder leaders.

Scoring was opened early by the winning side, Portia Miller scoring just before quarter time, before Hale's Brooke Corbett responded with a penalty corner goal after the break.

YMCC was able to maintain its lead from the 24-minute-mark onward, another big game and goal from Sienna Archer putting the side in front when scores were equal.

A 1-1 draw was played out between Suburban Lions and University of WA, with a goal for Lions' Meg Mccaffrey just two minutes after pushback, Bridget Smith able to then equalise 45 minutes later for UWA.

In the men's competition, while WASPs was able to gain the upper hand 4-2, Hunter Banyard's dominance up front was remarkable for Old Guildfordians, his hard work being rewarded with a goal early in the piece.

Old Guildfordians led 2-0 at half-time, before two goals from Jayme Walsh and singles from Kyle Potter and Paul Robertson brought WASPs back to a win.

By half-time of Hale's match over YMCC, the side was 4-0 with goals through young guns Hayden Beltz, Alec Rasmussen Josh Bowen and Marcus Jorgenson.

Luke Anderson was able to grab one back for YMCC, however another goal late in the match from Rasmussen sealed a 5-1 deal for Hale, crushing YMCC's finals hopes.

A 3-1 win for Victoria Park means the side will temporarily jump to the top of the ladder, being the first to knock Melville off the perch in almost a whole season.

Until just after half-time, Whitford looked in with a shot, with a nil-all scoreline between the two sides, who sit at two different ends of the ladder.

Kye Stirrat, Jack Pampling and Dylan Roe were on the scoreboard for Vic Park, Whitford's Lynden Ross the only to convert for the losing side.

Old Aquinians are the new ladder leaders after Sunday's HUGE win over Curtin, the side able to snatch nine goals to their opponent's nil at PHS.

Hat-tricks from Brodee Foster and Adrian Lockley helped the side to the massive victory, Jack Hayes netting a brace, followed by a single from Aaron Kleinschmidt.

Those who like seeing goal-fests certainly wouldn't have missed out this weekend, another large scoreline in the women's matches between Melville and Wolves, and Curtin and Victoria Park.

Melville scored just 60 seconds into the match through Courtney Smedley, however Wolves' Rebecca Greiner scored a hat-trick, backed up by goals from Ashlea Fey, and Jemma and Elly Buckley.

Victoria Park showed Curtin just why they're ladder-leading, with goals in the 5-0 drubbing coming from four individual goalscorers, including a double from young gun Tayah Medlen.

In the remaining men's matches for the weekend, a 1-1 draw was played out between both Melville and Wolves, and Fremantle Cockburn and University of WA.
