Strong contests sees a feast of thrillers

Published Sun 18 Apr 2021

A 3-3 thriller between Suburban Lions and Curtin University has kicked off the All Flags Women’s Premier League in style this weekend, with a back-and-forth tussle unable to separate the two sides.

Ashleigh Nelson hit the score board early in the fourth minute for the strong Lions outfit, but Curtin fought back with a goal in the next minute and piled on another early in the second quarter to get on top of the Lions.

Two more goals from Amy Lawton and Georgina Dowd in the 29th and 43rd minutes respectively looked to put the Lions in good stead with Curtin on the back foot, but the Curtin side dug deep to pull a goal back through Amelia Hawgood in the 47th minute to draw the sides level until the final buzzer.

In the men’s, Curtin were unable to replicate the women’s side, suffering a 5-0 defeat to Fremantle Cockburn, leaving the side towards the bottom of the table and still in search of their first win of the season.

The highlight fixture heading in to this week’s action was the 2020 Women’s Grand Final rematch between Victoria Park and Hale, with Hale searching for redemption over the powerhouse Vic Park side, after suffering a heartbreaking defeat in the dying moments of the Grand Final.

Vic Park once again proved too strong in a toughly fought contest and stamped their authority on the competition early, with Vic Park’s Tayah Medlen starring with two goals.

Vic Park’s and Hale’s men counterparts also went head-to-head in another 2-1 thriller, with all three goals by the sides coming in the final moments of the match.

After a neck-and-neck performance, the two sides were left goalless heading into the fourth quarter with either side unable to capitalise on their opportunities in an exciting contest.

Jason Gabriel of Vic Park was the one to break the deadlock in the 50th minute and looked to put Vic Park in pole position to snatch the victory from Hale.

Hale needed a hero to respond to the pressure from a fast-moving Vic Park side with the momentum and Alec Rasmussen stepped up to the occasion with an instant reply a minute later and in the 54th minute, secured a win for the ages with a goal to give Hale the three points.

Saturday’s final fixture between North Coast Raiders and Melville delivered another sensational dying moments thriller, with Raiders securing a come from behind draw with Melville.

Heading in to the second half, both sides were level 1-1, but Melville came out the blocks strong, piling on two goals from Neasa Flynn and Gemma Green in the 32nd and 49th minutes respectively, putting Melville up 3-1 with the Raiders looking unlikely to pull back.

The Raiders continued to press and the momentum swung their way, with goals in the 50th and 56th minutes to Tyler Hurst and Grace Stewart leading the side to snatch a point to kick off their season in style.
