Strong outings complete blockbuster All Flags fixture
Published Sun 18 Apr 2021
Another day of thrilling hockey in the All Flags Premier League is complete, closing out the completion of round one for the women and the men’s round four.
Reds, who are second on the table in the men’s competition, narrowly won 2-1 against Old Guildfordians, who are still yet to win a match and sitting at the bottom of the ladder.
A score from Aaron Kleinschmidt 20 minutes after the first whistle put Reds on the front foot, and then Tarrant Haami-Jones was able to find the scoresheet at the 32nd minute, both goals coming from penalty corners.
Tim Bates was the lone goal scorer from the Old Guildfordians side, also scoring through a penalty corner on the 44th minute.
WASPs men’s side have secured themselves just their second win from the first four matches, taking down YMCC 4-2 at Lemnos.
In a repeat of last year’s match between the two, YMCC fought hard to get the upper hand, but a strong WASPs side proved too good for the hosts.
WASPs scored through Jayme Walsh on a penalty corner early in the second quarter at the 17th minute, with Joel Mitton following suit and scoring five minutes later.
Michael Nicoli, a standout for YMCC, was able to find the backboard twice for his team, at the 26th minute and the 45th minute.
WASPs ran rampant against the YMCC defence line as fatigue began to kick in, with Lewis Barritt and Jayme Walsh scoring field goals late in the piece, at the 41st and 48th minute marks respectively.
The lone women’s match for the day looked as if it was going to be a close one, before WASP came back from being 1-0 behind to win the match 4-2.
Grace Hutchison was able to find the net first for YMCC just before quarter time and Kimberley Young brought WASPs back into the match after 23 minutes.
The Hockeyroos made a noticeable difference on the pitch, with Kalindi Commerford and Stephanie Kershaw scoring for WASPs, and Maddy Fitzpatrick with a penalty corner goal for YMCC, all in the final 10 minutes of the match.
WASPs captain Melissa Luff was a standout, scoring a field goal at the 55-minute mark, sealing her team’s victory.
Melville men had a thrilling 5-1 win against Whitford, securing themselves top spot in the standings and remaining undefeated for another week.
James Day, who is the current leading goal scorer for the competition, was able to score early at the 5th minute, and was the only goal scored until Matthew Stephenson from Whitford scored an equaliser 20 minutes later.
The second half was all in Melville’s hands, scoring three goals in a nine-minute period through Ryan Hyder at the 35th minute, Samuel Geers at the 40th minute and Ben Staines at the 44th minute.
To add to the excitement, Patrick Welsh scored as the match finished on the 60th minute, scoring the team’s 17th goal in just four weeks.
