Suburban Lions Hockey Club's president has expressed pride for its Division 1 Women's team's journey towards the grand final and securing a historic first premiership in a blockbuster grand final.

The Lions engaged in an intense battle with the University of Western Australia Hockey Club in the Premier League Division 1 Women's Grand Final last Saturday, where a hard fought contest resulted in neither side conceding a goal until the match was forced into shootouts.

Both the Lions and UWA matched each other shot for shot with the Lions racking up goals via Amy Lawton, Agueda Moroni and Georgina Dowd, while UWA made goals via Prada Herron, Lexie Pickering and Saysha Pillay.

After an impressive reverse shot by Dowd put the Lions in front by a single goal, goalkeeper Caitlin Cooper held off UWA's Jessie Reid in the nick of time to help the Lions hold off UWA 7-6.

Suburban Lions president Megan Bye said, beaming with pride, the achievement was the culmination of years of hard work showcasing the squad's remarkable charactee and unwavering to continuous improvement.

"Grand finals don't just happen, this journey demanded patience and resilience, allowing our players to develop, mature and meet the highest standards necessary for the grand finals," she said.

"What the team and coaches did well, is approach each game one week at a time, working their way to grand finals and to see it all come together on the night was unbelievable.

"They fought it down to the wire and I think that just shows how we've developed and what we have built within our club.

"It takes years to do that, you don't just do it overnight."

During the intense match, Bye said there were points where she couldn't watch but she enjoyed the overall vibe of the day with thousands heavily invested into the match.

"It was an amazing atmosphere to be part of, showcasing the festival of hockey which has so many level to it," she said.

"What I enjoyed most is seeing how hockey brings all families together at all levels and age groups.

"That is the essence of community sport and what our club strives for."
