Successful tournament wraps up in sensational fashion
Published Tue 01 Dec 2020
The inaugural Future Thundersticks Classic tournament has concluded in sensational fashion, after a round robin of thrillers saw two teams crowned champions.
The Breakers we crowned champions in the girls competition, completing an undefeated run with a 5-0 win over a strong Storm outfit.
The Storm went into the final losing 3-2 to the Suns, a team towards the bottom end of the table, and had seemed to have lost confidence going into the big match.
With a relatively even spread goal-wise across the competition, the Breakers showed that shutting down teams defensively was the way to go, only conceding the one goal going into the final match.
In the boys competition, defence prevailed over attack, with the Storm claiming the bragging rights of winning gold over an all-out attacking Suns team.
A 3-1 win saw the Storm beat a rampaging Suns, who in their four games leading up to the climax of the competition, had scored a total of 15 goals.
The Storm had only six goals to their name leading up to the big dance, giving legs to the theory that a defensive master class trumps an attacking master class.
The tournament was a success, with over 150 young and talented athletes given the opportunity to experience high-level competition in a year disrupted by COVID-19.
Speaking on the success of the tournament, Hockey WA CEO Stu Gilsenan said, "It's fantastic that Hockey WA is able to provide this tournament in a year of such uncertainty surrounding opportunities given to these budding young stars involved."
"The tournament has been received positively by all parties and it's great to see everyone getting incredibly invested in; we're hopeful there's an opportunity to continue this tournament for the years to come."
