Sultan Nazrin Shah & Tuanku Zara Cup | Results
Published Mon 13 Nov 2023
A collective of Australian indoor hockey players have made the most of a special opportunity to travel to Malaysia and showcase the best the country has to offer in newly developed invitational tournaments.
As part of the 2023 Asian Engagement program, Hockey WA sent teams to compete in the Sultan Nazrin Shah and Tuanku Zara Cups, representing Australia as part of the inaugural Open Men's & Women's Indoor International Invitational tour to Ipoh, Malaysia.
Throughout the week-long tournament in early November, the two Australian teams went head to head with teams from Malaysia, Switzerland, New Zealand, Namibia, South Africa and Hong Kong.
During the Sultan Nazrin Shah Men's tournament, the Australia were off to a rough start with a 8-2 loss to Malaysia but quickly bounced back with a 24-2 drubbing of Hong Kong China, where nine different players scored during the match.
The Men's team built up a winning streak with victories over South Africa and New Zealand before falling short against Namibia to put them in the 3rd Place Play-Off against New Zealand, falling just short of securing the bronze medal and finishing in fourth following a 6-4 loss.
Jett Leong scored 11 goals for Australia throughout the tournament, followed by Kurt Budgeon with eight, Hayden Michel with six, Mitch McGrath with five, then Vincent Harman (4), Liam Woodward & Ross Hall (3), and James Naughtin & Julius Gottstein (1).
In the Tuanku Zara Women's tournament, Australia started strong with a 5-0 win over New Zealand but fell short of backing up their efforts with a 6-4 loss to Switzerland.
The team's rollercoaster ride continued with a 3-2 victory over Malaysia, followed by a 4-0 loss to South Africa and a 2-2 draw with Namibia to put them in the 3rd Place Play-Off against Malaysia.
Australia pulled through a tight contest to come away with the bronze medal, defeating Malaysia 2-0.
Litiana Field scored five goals throughout the tournament, followed by Jamie Zimmerman with three goals, Brooke Welsh & Holly Gilbar with two goals, and Ella White, Sophie D'Castro, Layla Riley and Jessica Moffat with a goal each.
