Teams fight for finals spots and glory in round two of Ric Charlesworth Classic

Published Sun 27 Mar 2022

Round two of the Ric Charlesworth Classic at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University has produced some nail-biting results, as WA hockey’s best compete in the eight-day competition heading into the regular hockey season.

The women’s Breakers, coming off a 6-2 victory, narrowly defeated the Highlanders one-nil in a tight contest.

The women’s Highlanders, boasting one of the younger sides in the women’s competition, looked to challenge the Breakers through their leader in defence, Edwina Bone, but a lone goal to Renee Rockliff late in the third quarter for the Breakers sunk their chances of a victory.

The Suns have gone winless in the women’s competition, after suffering another defeat to the Outbacks in a close contest.

The Outbacks missed their chances early on in the piece, but young star Matilda Banfield secured the one-nil victory in the 56th minute with a goal for her side.

The reigning champions in the men’s competition, the Suns, suffered a shock defeat to the Highlanders, losing two-to-one.

The Suns had multiple opportunities to pull back the score throughout the match but were unable to capitalise on their attacking pressure around goal.

With both sides at a one-one deadlock late in the match, Highlanders’ Brodee Foster secured the 2-1 victory, sending a rocket into goal from a penalty corner in the 57th minute.

The men’s Outbacks secured a two-one victory over the Breakers.

Kye Stirrat opened the scoring for the Outbacks in the 27th minute but the young Breakers side continued to push and were rewarded for their efforts with a goal to Ben Staines in the 48th minute.

Stirrat again replied just four minutes later with a goal to secure the two-one victory for his side.

The Ric Charlesworth Classic action continues on Wednesday 30 March from 6:30pm at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.
