Thundersticks to learn from tough NSW clash
Published Fri 21 Oct 2022
The Perth Thundersticks will look for a swift improvement for their round five clash next week against the Tassie Tigers at home after suffering two narrow defeats at the hands of the NSW Pride for round four at the Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre.
The men’s Perth Thundersticks side suffered their first loss for the season after four rounds of action in an exciting match against a talent-laden New South Wales team.
Four goals were scored in the first ten minutes of the match, with NSW’s Ehren Hazell giving his side a 2-0 lead, but the Thundersticks clawed back with two goals through Chris Bausor and Jake Harvie to bring the sides level.
NSW scored two more to take the score to 4-2 in their favour at the half but an Aran Zalewski goal in the 48th minute brought the Thundersticks back to life.
A penalty corner to the Thundersticks after the final buzzer resulted in four separate penalty corner attempts, with the Thundersticks unable to score the leveller in the dying moments.
Kookaburra and Thundersticks star Jake Harvie says the loss will only improve the side heading into the backend of the season, with the narrow defeat the only hiccup for the side thus far in 2022.
“It was a ripping game to be a part of – they are a great side, New South Wales,” Harvie said.
“We want and need these challenges against the stronger sides as it allows the group to continue to learn and improve.
“Ultimately we want to be playing our best hockey towards the back end of the season, so we take what we can from these results to help us reach our best which is the most important thing for us.”
The women’s Perth Thundersticks team suffered a 2-0 defeat to NSW and will look for a swift return to their red-hot form that saw them start the season with two wins.
Maddison Smith was the lone scorer for NSW in the 21st minute with a field goal and conversion, but Thundersticks goalkeeper Aleisha Power was immense in the net, resulting in no more scores for the match.
It was a valiant effort from an emerging Thundersticks team who were right in it until the very end, but ultimately just fell short.
The men’s and women’s Perth Thundersticks teams will hit the field in their final home match of the season on Saturday 29 October at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University. Get tickets.
