Top-of-the-table clash headlines big round of hockey

Published Thu 10 Jun 2021

A red-hot top-of-the-table clash will headline this weekend’s All Flags Premier League, with Melville’s men’s side looking to regain its winning streak when it lines up against Victoria Park on Saturday.

Melville currently sit atop the ladder with one game in its pocket, still yet to play its round five match from April which was postponed due to Perth going into a three-day COVID lockdown.

Now sitting in second place, Victoria Park put on a stellar performance on Tuesday evening against WASPs, trailing 1-0 at quarter time to come back and win the match 4-2.

The matches will be played as a double header, with the Melville women’s side also looking to take on Victoria Park, just two points separating the two sides.

The incredibly close standings in the women’s All Flags Premier League may see a slight separation when first-placed Hale takes on fourth-placed WASPs.

As of Thursday morning, just one point separates the two teams on the ladder, however Hale will play its rescheduled round two match on Thursday evening against Curtin, with last year’s grand finallists looking to extend their lead over second-placed University of WA to four points.

WASPs currently sit on the same number of points as UWA and Wolves, however a lower goal difference leaves the side in fourth place.

Friday night opens the action under lights, with 11th-placed Whitfords due to host Reds, a side in hot form after only losing one of its nine games already played this season, sitting on six wins and two draws.

Fremantle Cockburn will look to have its first win since May 23, when it is due to host YMCC at Lakelands Hockey and Sporting Facility on Saturday afternoon in the men’s All Flags Premier League.

A ninth-versus-tenth battle will be played in the women’s competition where Lions will look to secure just its second win for the year, YMCC still chasing its first, only sitting on one point.

Hale men’s side will follow the women’s fixturing and also line up against WASPs, just five points separating these two sides as of Thursday morning.

The side’s round five match against Curtin will be played on Thursday evening, and while a victory won’t advance the side on the standings, it will result in being just one point behind Westside Wolves.

The Wolves men’s side will play its match against Old Guildfordians on Sunday and remain the only team to have beaten powerhouse side Melville for the 2021 season.

The women’s All Flags Premier League also sees Wolves’ women play a home game Sunday, but instead playing against North Coast Raiders.

A double-header between UWA and Curtin in the men’s and women’s competitions will round out an exciting weekend of All Flags Premier League action on Sunday afternoon.
