Top-of-the-table clash set to thrill in All Flags Premier League fixtures
Published Thu 19 Aug 2021
Hockey fans in Western Australia should expect a nail-biter this weekend between men's ladder leaders Reds and second-placed Melville, the winner of the match sliding into top spot with just one game to spare.
Reds snuck up on the former leaders last weekend when the side snatched a 9-0 win over Curtin, with Melville goal-machine James Day quiet over past weeks, his contributions to the side in the first half of the season hard to ignore.
Day is still leading the Eric Pearce Leading Goal Scorer race with a whopping 31 goals, all off penalty corners, ahead of Reds' Aaron Kleinschmidt's 19 goals.
In the women's All Flags Premier League, Hale will look for redemption when it takes on Westside Wolves this week, after the fourth-placed side lost to bottom-of-the-barrel YMCC last weekend.
While the side is without star player Georgie Morgan, it looks hopeful this weekend, the last time these two matched up resulting in a 4-3 win for Hale, and the match being a good practice for the upcoming finals.
A win for Wolves' men's side over eighth-placed Hale this weekend will further help the side's chances of being the fifth inclusion in the men's All Flags Premier League finals for 2021.
WASPs will get to open the action on Friday evening at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University, with the men set to take on Fremantle Cockburn first, followed by the women's match against Melville shortly after.
Saturday afternoon, the Victoria Park women will look to defeat Suburban Lions to hold its spot atop the ladder and Old Guildfordians will host finals-bound University of WA.
In the men's All Flags Premier League on Sunday, YMCC will play against Victoria Park and Whitford will clash with Curtin, while in the women's, YMCC will host Curtin at Lemnos Field and North Coast Raiders will play against University of WA.
