Top sides regain hot form
Published Sat 15 May 2021
This week’s All Flags Premier League action kicked off with two sides coming off of strong wins in Lions and WASPs in the women’s competition.
It was an extremely tough contest between the two sides, with neither side taking full control of the match, but in the end, WASPs’ Melissa Luff led her side to a 1-0 victory through a goal in the 20th minute.
In the men’s competition, Vic Park and OGMHC faced-off at Perth Hockey Stadium, with OGMHC looking to continue their momentum following their first win of the season last round against Whitford.
The match resulted in a 2-0 loss to OGMHC, but the match was back-and-forth for the majority of the time, with OGMHC looking likely to score on multiple occasions, ultimately unable to capitalise on their opportunities.
WASPs looked to make a push towards the top end of the table in the men’s competition, facing a Fremantle Cockburn side who are coming off a narrow 2-1 loss to Wolves.
WASPs scored two goals in quick succession in the 21st and 30th minutes to Jayme Walsh and Kyle Potter respectively, proving to be too much for Fremantle Cockburn who only managed to pull back the one goal for the rest of the match through a goal to Kieren Abbott.
Vic Park faced North Coast Raiders in the women’s competition, with a plethora of national players in both sides looking to shape the match-up into a red-hot contest.
The score-line didn’t match the build-up, with Vic Park proving to be too strong for the raiders, beating the side 5-1 with the Panthers now sitting at the top of the table.
Curtin University suffered another loss for the season in the men’s competition, losing to YMCC 3-1 with the side still looking for their first win in this year’s competition; two goals to YM’s Jesse Regan leading the side to a strong victory.
In the women’s competition, YMCC were also looking for their first win of the season, coming close to the three points, with a 1-1 draw with Melville securing a point for the side on the table.
Sunday saw another exciting day of All Flags Premier League match ups, the first of the day saw Lemnos Turf host the Wolves and Curtin’s women’s sides.
Wolves got the upper hand with a huge 4-0 win over the visiting side, with goals being scored through key players Rosie Malone, Jemma Buckley, Madi Ratcliffe and Elly Buckley.
UWA were top of the ladder coming into the weekend, however Hale knocked them off their perch, a hattrick from penalty corner powerhouse Georgina Morgan sealing a 5-2 victory for the 2020 Grand Finalists.
Hale’s other goals were scored via Tyler Pedley and Brooke Corbett, with Jess Butterworth and Courtney Schonell being the goal scorers for UWA.
The men’s competition saw plenty of goals scored, a big 7-1 score for Wolves against Whitford, who are still yet to get their first win for the season.
Oscar Charlesworth, Dane Gavranich and Matt Edgar were all able to find the back of the net twice for Wolves, Simon Benetti scoring the seventh goal, Paul Austin-Pugh being Whitford’s lone goal scorer.
Melville remain unbeaten after they won five goals to three over Reds, James Day repeating his success from recent weeks to score from two penalty corners.
Wesley Stewart, Matt Willis and Justin McDougall were Melville’s other goal scorers, the Reds scorer list including Chaz Davies, Daniel Robertson and Aaron Kleinschmidt.
The men’s match between Hale and UWA was a complete reverse of the women’s, the twilight match resulting in UWA getting a 5-2 win over Hale, the home side.
Five individual goal scorers in Ben Baxter, Coby Green, Frank Main, Jacob Evans and Daniel Timms led the side to the feat, with young guns Alec Rasmussen and Liam Flynn the scorers for Hale.
