Under-18s' bright future
Published Mon 12 Apr 2021
The Under 18 National Championships are nearing a conclusion, with results showing promising signs for the remainder of the tournament... and the future of WA hockey!
On Friday afternoon, the men’s side took on South Australia and came out 7-1, with Hamish Adamson, Patrick Andrew and Ian Grobbelaar all finding the back of the net twice each for WA, and captain Thomas Keating with a single score.
The women also had a big win on the same day, goals being scored by Maddison Fenwick, Beatriz Monger-Molowny, Nicole Enslin, Elyssa Melville and Saysha Pillay resulting in a 5-1 win over ACT.
Before a rest day on Sunday, teams worked hard to replicate their success, which the men were able to do when they defeat ACT 3-1, two goals scored through Hamish Adamson, and the other by Patrick Andrew on a penalty corner.
Maddison Fenwick’s goal against Queensland unfortunately wasn’t enough to get the win, when the women’s side went down 3-1 to the 2019 Championship winners.
Monday morning, the women’s side beat Tasmania in a narrow 2-1 win, Maddison Fenwick and Saysha Pillay scoring one each.
A top-of-the-table clash saw the men take on New South Wales State and come out the victors 5-3.
Ian Grobbelaar, Patrick Andrew, Max Freedman, Angus Adamson and Hamish Adamson all got on the scoreboard for WA.
Hamish Adamson is currently second in the tournament goal scoring with six goals, and Patrick Andrew coming in at fifth on the tally with four goals.
In the ladies, four of the top 10 goal scorers are from the West Australian side, Maddison Fenwick currently second on the list with four field goals scored.
The men are currently on top of the standings, and the women are second to Queensland, by one point.
The remainder of the matches will depend on standings at the end of the round matches.
Games still to come:
Men – 13 April vs Victoria (Development)
Women – 13 April vs New South Wales State.
