Victorians Ratcliffe and Padget share 2021 Charlesworth Medal
Published Thu 16 Sep 2021
The 2021 Hockey WA Annual Awards at the Pan Pacific Hotel Perth produced a stunning result, when the coveted Charlesworth Medal for Fairest & Best in the women’s All Flags Premier League resulted in a tie.
Madi Ratcliffe of Westside Wolves and Hayley Padget of YMCC claimed the honour, after stellar seasons from both individuals as leaders within their respective sides.
Unfortunately Padget was unable to be present for the ceremony, but Ratcliffe shared her delight, which we’re sure Padget would reciprocate.
“Winning the award tonight was a bit of a shock, I didn’t expect to win it,” Ratcliffe says.
“I know for me personally, heading into a Grand Final this weekend with Wolves and receiving this award is a really positive start to the week.”
Ratcliffe’s move to Wolves this season has been a huge success and she says that going the whole way with the side will top off a week to remember.
“The team has been really successful this year and we’ve come together really well so we’re confident of our chances to be competitive on Sunday and hopefully run away with the victory,” Ratcliffe says.
“Moving to Wolves this year has been fantastic for me; I’ve really enjoyed the atmosphere and comradery amongst the group and have found a great balance between performing well and really enjoying my hockey.”
Ratcliffe says that sharing the award with a fellow Victorian and former teammate at Doncaster at club level is a special moment for the two.
“Sharing this with Hayley is amazing,” Ratcliffe says.
“I played club hockey with Hayley for a year or so at Doncaster and at Hockey Club Melbourne together; she’s an amazing player and ever better person so this is really special.”
