WA athletes drive medal-winning efforts at Commonwealth Games
Published Tue 09 Aug 2022
Eight Western Australian hockey players will return home with added baggage following the success of the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The Hockeyroos and Kookaburras both performed powerfully on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
WA’s Aleisha Power, Karri Somerville, Penny Squibb, Shanea Tonkin and Georgia Wilson all played pivotal roles that drove the Hockeyroos to a silver medal. For the Kookaburras, Jake Harvie, Tom Wickham and Aran Zalewski helped lead Australia’s top men’s side to an undefeated competition run, with a dominant 7-0 win over India in the gold medal match.
“On behalf of Hockey WA and the entire Western Australian hockey community, I would like to congratulate the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras on a stellar effort across this year’s Commonwealth Games – a great result claiming the silver and gold medals,” Hockey WA CEO Fabian Ross said.
“Western Australia had strong representation across the 2022 Commonwealth Games, with eight players across both teams representing the state in our national sides – an extremely pleasing outcome for hockey in the state.
“It is fantastic to see WA hockey represented so strongly in our national sides. I would like to send a heartfelt congratulations and well done from the wider WA hockey community, and I encourage everyone across the state to show their support of our WA-based stars when they play for the Perth Thundersticks later this year.”
Upon the players’ return, focus will shift to this year’s Sultana Bran Hockey One season, with our elite-level Hockeyroos and Kookaburras set to lead our Thundersticks’ campaigns.
Perth Thundersticks memberships are on sale now – with the Thundersticks’ first match to be played at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University on Saturday 1 October.
