WASPs' Joel Mitton hits 300 matches
Published Fri 19 Aug 2022
WASP Hockey Club stalwart Joel Mitton will reach his 300th Premier League match this weekend when his side faces off against Fremantle Cockburn at Perth Hockey Stadium on Saturday.
Only two players in the club’s history have managed to achieve this feat before, putting him in special company alongside Murray McIntyre and Chris Munro.
Joel debuted at a young age under WASPs legend Stephen 'China' Davies in 2005 and has had a very successful career since then.
Playing in 300 games during a particularly strong era for WASPs shows the caliber of player Joel is - he was nicknamed “Mr September” by the group after only playing in the team’s winning grand final appearances and conveniently being overseas or injured for a number of grand final losses (premiership’s in 2016 and 2019).
A player who could play any position on the field, during his 17-year career, there has only been three seasons where Joel hasn’t hit the score board, albeit the fact that he is also often given the job of marking the opposition’s best forward.
Congratulations to Joel for reaching such a significant milestone!
