Western Hockey Masters Gala Day returns to Perth Hockey Stadium for 2024
Published Wed 04 Dec 2024
This weekend, the power of modern medicine and the importance of staying active will take centre stage at the Western Hockey Masters Gala Day.
The event will take place on Saturday, 7 December, at Perth Hockey Stadium, Curtin University, featuring four exciting matches between eight Masters teams.
The competing athletes have either battled serious health conditions or undergone significant surgeries, showcasing their remarkable recoveries and resilience.
Western Hockey Masters president Tony Jones said the event originated nine years ago as a light-hearted challenge between mates who had undergone hip or knee replacements, and it went on to become the Bionic Cup.
“This is the ninth year of the Bionic Cup between players with artificial hips and artificial knees,” he said.
“It has become iconic and a symbol of what can be achieved through modern surgery and proper rehabilitation.
“It shows that we can continue to live active lives, even after major surgeries.”
The Gala Day will also feature the fourth match between cancer survivors and heart condition patients, including people who have had triple bypass surgery.
Jones said the match is a testament to the strength of both the body and the mind in overcoming serious health issues.
For the third consecutive year, two teams of 80-year-olds will compete for the OBE Challenge Cup, highlighting the benefits of continuing to play sport and maintain an active social life.
This exciting match serves as a reminder that age is no barrier to staying fit and connected.
Another highly anticipated match will feature Nice ‘n Kneesy and Breast Friends as they battle it out for the AOA Challenge Cup.
These teams include women who have benefited from modern medical advancements such as knee replacements and breast cancer treatments.
The Western Hockey Masters Gala Day has grown significantly in popularity over the years, and with that, the event has garnered increasing support from the health community through sponsorships.
“The growing interest and support from sponsors reflect the event’s impact and importance,” Jones said.
Come on down to Perth Hockey Stadium this Saturday to witness and heartwarming and inspiring celebration of resilience, recovery, and the enduring benefits of staying active.
The Gala Day is more than just a sporting event -- it is a reminder that with the right medical care, dedication and a positive mindset, it’s never too late to keep playing, stay fit and live life to the fullest.
