The matches for the Australian Olympic teams against New Zealand mark the flagship national hockey teams’ final matches on home soil before they begin their Olympic campaigns.

Both the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras will use the matches to fine tune for Tokyo, while they will also be determined to follow up their recent successful Trans-Tasman Series against the Black Sticks with another favourable outcome.

“These matches against New Zealand will be crucial for us less than a month out from our first game of the Olympics against Japan,” said Kookaburras Head Coach Colin Batch.

“We will be required to play on back-to-back days in Tokyo, so these Pro League matches will be about the players selected in the Olympic team bringing their best and managing the quick turnaround.

“Considering we have not played in Perth since March last year and the fact there will be no Australian supporters in the stands at the Olympics, the players are really excited about playing in front of what is hopefully a huge and vocal crowd on both days against New Zealand.”

The situation is similar for the Hockeyroos, who continue to progress well under the guidance of two-time Olympic Gold medallist, Head Coach Katrina Powell.

“The team who has been selected to compete at the Olympics knows the really hard work starts now with ensuring we are at our best when we need to be,” said Powell.

“These Pro League matches against a quality opponent will be invaluable for us. It has been so long since the girls have represented their country in front of a home crowd, so they cannot wait to run out on 26 June. Hopefully all of Perth and surrounds can get along and show their support for the team leading into our Olympic campaign and first match against Spain.”

The Kookaburras are currently the number one ranked team in the world, with the Hockeyroos heading to Tokyo ranked fourth.
