YM’s Lim hits milestone moment
Published Sun 18 Apr 2021
Established YMCC Hockey Club player Matthew Lim will reach the 200 game milestone this round, with the club looking to snatch a win from WASPS to celebrate the occasion.
Lim, a key pillar in YMCC’s success over the years, says he’s proud to be able to reach the milestone number and have his name sit aside some of the club’s greats.
“I'm very proud and it's a great feeling to reach this many games for the club; there are some incredible players that have hit that milestone at our club and around the league, so I'm just thankful that my body has held up and I've been able to be selected for that many games,” Lim says.
A stellar career that attributed to multiple of YMCC’s premierships in recent years, Lim’s hockey life has been one to remember and he’s thankful to be able to play aside such a strong group for a long period of time.
“YM has won five premierships while I’ve been at the club and I’m thankful to be able to have played in three myself,” Lim says.
“I think my fondest memory was back in 2009 when we beat Wolves when their team was really strong and we were definitely the underdogs; I didn't have a big impact on the actual game, but I think it marked the start of our run of success and I remember Tyler Lovell dominating.
“It was also the start of a really special five years or so where we had a really tight group and we played great hockey together, but we were also close friends and had a really strong culture.”
Lim says he’s excited with the group YMCC has now and expects the side to go through their current transition phase with the potential to have more success in the near future.
“We're in a bit of a transition phase, but I think we're exactly where we want to be; we have been competitive and threatening in all of our games this year and we've had a slew of 17-21 year old guys logging some really impactful minutes and gaining confidence,” Lim says.
“To me, it's exciting to see these young guys coming through knowing that they have a chance to achieve similar success as we did if they stick together.”
Although it’s a milestone occasion for Lim, his focus is on the task ahead against WASPS and hopes to gain a win to put YM in good stead heading in to the thick of the season.
“We want to win this weekend and always expect to get a result when we play,” Lim says.
“We're missing a bunch of our young guys at the Under-18s and are probably underdogs, but we take immense pride in making it as difficult as we can for our opposition and I expect we will do the same for Wasps.”
YMCC has been such an integral part of Lim’s life and he expressed his delight to be able to be a part of a club that has contributed so much to himself.
“YMCC has been, and continues to be, a massive part of my life; it's a terrific family-oriented club that has provided countless friends, professional connections and fond memories.
Lim’s YMCC look to snatch a win against WASPS for the milestone moment, at 3:30pm at Lemnos Field.
