Hockey WA, located in Australia's most western capital city Perth, is uniquely positioned to engage with Asia - and, with one of the world's best high-performance centres and the base of the Australian Hockeyroos and the Kookaburra, it has plenty to offer.

As part of its Strategic Plan, Hockey WA has in recent years turned a sharp focus to Asia - providing learning and development opportunities to many organisations and associations, in addition to allocating dedicated resources to raise the sport's profile across the globe.

Hockey WA provides tours of Perth for visiting international teams. These tours offer the visiting sides the opportunity to play against high-level teams, including State Teams, the Perth Thundersticks, and Premier League-level squads. Visiting sides get to play on the Olympic-standard PHS turf, while our WA athletes can compete against different styles of hockey that differ from their normal experience here in WA. Hockey WA has, in recent years, sent teams to other countries to compete in high-level competition play. The aim of these tours is to accelerate the development of our Western Australian athletes while providing the host nation an opportunity to further develop their own talent. In addition to this, our athletes are provided the opportunity to sightsee and experience new cultures. Education opportunities can be provided to visiting nations to develop their coaches. Recently, key Hockey WA coaches have undertaken an FIH accredited course, meaning they can now teach their learnings to visiting coaches. This will provide Hockey WA with a unique revenue source, as these courses can be user pay due to the invaluable FIH accredited knowledge. Hockey WA holds elite level competitions for nations across the world. The highlight being the Youth International Gryphon Cup, an Under-16s tournament across four days at PHS. This year, Hockey WA will also look to hold the International Indoor Challenge and plans to expand on both competitions to a range of age cohorts and ability in years to come.

MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Hockey WA is dedicated to engaging multicultural communities across Western Australia. We aim to make hockey accessible and appealing to all cultural backgrounds through cultural exchange events and leadership programs for under-represented groups. By fostering an inclusive and diverse hockey community, we enrich the sport with varied perspectives and talents while promoting social integration in Western Australia.

HOCKEY WA'S IMPACT

The KMSB Youth International Gryphon Cup started in Perth, Western Australia as a youth event. To this day we still honour the pledge; to allow younger players the experience of hockey on an international and professional stage.

Perth is the proud home of the Hockey Australia High Performance Program and plays host to the extended squads for both the Men’s and Women’s National hockey teams; the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos.

The KMSB Youth International Gryphon Cup, established in 2007, is an Under-16 tournament for boys and girls. The tournament is played over four days and continues to offer a high level of elite youth competition. With continued elite level national and international event hosting the high-performance facilities and two world class synthetic turf pitches make Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University one of the best hockey venues in the world.

The KMSB Youth International Gryphon Cup has been able to attract national and state representative teams from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and from within Australia to compete.

After a two-year break due to COVID-19 interruptions, the OMSB Youth International Gryphon Cup returned in its thirteenth year. The Cup has grown in number of countries and prestige. It’s our ambition to continue to build the Cup and position it rightly as Asia’s preeminent tournament for youth players to compete, improve and meet fellow aspirant hockey lovers from all over the world.
